Dancing On Ice 2021 winner Sonny Jay admits Faye Brookes ‘totally deserved to win’

He was crowned champion of Dancing On Ice 2021 on Sunday night.

But Sonny Jay has admitted that his competitor Faye Brookes ‘totally deserved to win’ the competition as he tipped her for victory from week one.

The radio presenter, 27, beat Faye and Colin Jackson in the final, despite the former Corrie actress, 33, being bookies favourite to win.

Following his win, some disgruntled fans took to social media to air their frustrations, with many believing Faye should have been champion.

And it seems that despite his success, Sonny is in agreement as he told how he thought Faye should have won but he couldn’t do anything about the public vote.

Her told Metro.co.uk: ‘Faye was my biggest competition from the start. I said it from the very beginning. She came out in our first week and she absolutely smashed it. I thought she was going to win.

‘But look, it all comes down to the public vote. It’s just one of those things. If those people wanted Faye to win, after the public vote I couldn’t do anything about it.’

The Capital Radio star added: ‘Faye totally deserved to win. She’s amazing. She’s a brilliant ice skater. She’s a lovely person. But it went my way I guess.’

Despite his words, Sonny certainly appeared to be enjoying his victory as he rocked up to his Capital Radio shift on Monday morning in the same clothes as his final skate after pulling an all-nighter.

Wearing his glitzy shirt from the night before and brandishing his trophy, Sonny was surprised by Roman Kemp and co-host Sian Welby with a spectacular ‘after party’ to celebrate.

They provided him with a curry – which he ate for breakfast – as he appeared slightly worse for wear just hours after lifting the top prize.

Ready for his 6AM start, Sonny arrived to learn that his co-hosts had arranged for an ice rink to be built on the roof terrace of Capital’s Leicester Square studios as a surprise.

Sonny’s Dancing On Ice skating partner Angela Egan, his fiancé Lauren Faith and fellow Dancing on Ice contestant Rebekah Vardy also joined him live on air.

When asked what was going through his head whilst waiting for the results the night before, Sonny said: ‘To be honest, it didn’t matter.

‘I did the Bolero, that to me was a tick off bucket list, you go on a show like this, you want to do the Bolero, it didn’t matter.

‘But the fact it happened and I won and I got the trophy, mate, unreal. Unreal. Honestly, I’m so chuffed.’

The Capital FM star couldn’t hide his shock at being crowned series champion after beating out Faye and Colin  in Sunday’s live final.

It comes after a series which has been plagued with woes which forced the final to air a week early, with five stars forced to pull out due to injury or positive Covid tests.
