Terrifying moment train hits broken-down bus on level crossing and derails near Gothenburg – but passengers escape with only minor injuries

A man waiting at a bus stop looked on in horror when a passenger train derailed after it ploughed into a broken-down coach on a level crossing in Sweden.

Freddy Persson said debris flew over his head from the impact as he filmed the locomotive reducing the empty bus to a mangled mess of metal.

Thankfully the crash only caused minor injuries at the crossing between Lillhagen and Gunnestrop, near Gothenburg, yesterday morning. 

A short while before the terrifying collision the bus driver had stepped out of the stranded vehicle.

Shocking footage shows the yellow train smashing into the rear end of the bus, with the impact flipping the front end in the air and derailing the train. 

The horn of the train can be heard frantically sounding as it approaches the bus. 

With no chance to slow down, the train slams into the back of the bus – appearing to bend it in two before it is engulfed in debris , flames and smoke. 

Mr Persson  begins running away from the scene shouting.  He eventually pans back to the site of the collision to reveal the horrendous damage caused to the bus. 

Swedish Police confirmed the bus had been empty at the time of the crash and there were around 50 passengers onboard the train. Three people went to hospital with minor injuries.

Mr Persson said he took out his phone to film after spotting the broken down bus.

When the train collided with it, he said, he ‘ran like crazy and [could] hear stuff flying over my head. Crazy day.’

The bus has now been seized for further investigation. 

A police spokesperson added: ‘No one is currently being suspected of any crime.’
