You can now turn the classic hot cross buns into cheesy garlic and herb bread for Easter. 

The simple three-step method, shared by Woolworths, takes just 35 minutes to complete from start to finish and serves six. 

To make the cheesy buns, only six ingredients are required – butter, thyme leaves, rosemary, garlic cloves, grated cheddar and fruitless hot cross buns. 

The epic savoury twist to the classic Easter hot cross bun will likely be a crowd pleaser as its filled with cheddar cheese and topped with herbs.

Start by preheating the oven to 180 degrees Celsius then cutting a deep crisscross pattern on the top of each bun.

Place the buns in a baking dish, ensuring they fit ‘snuggly’ beside one another, then in a separate bowl combine the butter, thyme leaves, rosemary and garlic together.

Brush the surface of the buns with the butter mixture, then scatter the cheddar on top. 

How to make cheesy garlic and herb hot cross buns:  

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 pk fruitless hot cross buns
  • 80g butter, melted
  • 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves, plus extra to serve
  • 2 tsp chopped fresh rosemary
  • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 2/3 cup grated cheddar

METHOD:  

1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Cut a deep crisscross pattern into tops of hot cross buns. Place buns in a baking dish so they fit snuggly and are just touching

2. In a small bowl, combine butter, 2 tsp thyme leaves, rosemary and garlic. Brush cut surfaces of buns with butter mixture

3. Scatter over cheddar. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden and cheese has melted. Serve buns topped with extra thyme leaves

Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese has melted.

Store leftover buns in an airtight container, and when reheating wrap in foil then place in the oven at 180 degrees Celsius for ten minutes.
