The It’s A Sin star shared a picture of David from his hospital bed in New York wearing a neck brace, and wrote in the caption: ‘David is recovering from spinal surgery.

‘It was fairly intensive, took over seven hours, but he’s in good spirits and doing well. It’s one of the scarier, more hopeless feelings- hoping for the best, trying not to fear the worst, waiting a call with news.

‘Thankfully, all went according to plan. Whew..! Two thumbs up. I love you, @dbelicious. Your strength inspires me. And thanks to NY-Presbyterian Hospital for, well, everything.’

In his latest role, Neil stars as Henry Coltrane in the Aids Crisis drama It’s A Sin and recently weighed in on the debate that gay actors should play gay characters.

The shows creator, Russell T. Davies, has been vocal about the topic saying in an interview with Radio Times: ‘You wouldn’t cast someone able-bodied and put them in a wheelchair; you wouldn’t black someone. Authenticity is leading us to joyous places.’

Neil however claimed he believes it’s better to focus on hiring the ‘best actor’ for a role than choose a person based on their sexuality.

Speaking to The Times’ Times2, he said: ‘I think there’s something sexy about casting a straight actor to play a gay role, if they’re willing to invest a lot into it.’

Neil said that he didn’t like to ‘jump on to labelling’ but felt it was important for a gay actor to be ‘a visible option’ for all types of roles.

It’s A Sin follows the lives of five 18-year-olds as they navigate life during the AIDS crisis in 1981, and sees Years&Years singer Olly Alexander take the lead role.
