British man, 65, dies in house fire after wooden home he had built in Spain burns down ‘while he slept’

  • The 65-year-old built the home in Comares on land he purchased years earlier
  • The fire is thought to have broken out at around 9pm local time on Wednesday
  • A routine investigation is underway but the death is not thought to be suspicious

A British man has died in a house fire at a village in southern Spain.

Firefighters found the 5-year-old’s body after putting out the blaze at the property in Comares, an hour’s drive north-east of Malaga.

Mayor Manuel Robles described the man as ‘much-loved’ in the local community.

Police have launched a routine investigation but say there is nothing at this stage that points to any suspicious circumstances.

The man was living in a wooden house he had built on land he purchased several years ago.

He is thought to have been asleep when the blaze started, at around 9pm on Wednesday, at the property in an area known as Chiquin by a footbridge over a river called Rio de las Cuevas.

A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency services co-ordinator confirmed: ‘A man has died after a blaze in a wooden house in the municipality of Comares.

‘Firefighters, Civil Guard and local police were among the emergency services mobilised after the alarm was raised.

‘Fire crews found the body of a 65-year-old man inside the property.

‘The house was burnt to the ground and the flames led to the roof collapsing.’

Police sources confirmed the dead man was British and a routine investigation was underway into the incident.
