Burger King has finally launched a vegan burger a year after the chain caused fury after revealing their plant-based Rebel Whopper was cooked on the same grill as meat.

The UK branch of the US fast food giant will sell a 100 per cent vegan bean burger from 11th January.

It features two signature veggie patties on a toasted sesame bun, topped with fresh-cut lettuce, juicy tomatoes, ketchup and vegan mayo.

The Vegan Bean Burger will retail at around £4.59 on its own and around £5.59 with a drink.

Last year, the chain launched a Rebel Whopper for Veganuary,  which is made from soy, but is not suitable for vegans or vegetarians prompting an outpouring of anger from non-meat eaters online.

Burger King said at the time the burger is aimed at ‘flexitarians’ – people who eat meat but are cutting down on the animal-based food they eat – but vegans said the chain ‘shot itself in the foot’ and called the product a ‘missed opportunity’. 

In February, they bought back their Halloumi King burger as a permanent fixture on their menu – but the meat-free dish also isn’t strictly vegetarian as it’s cooked in the same fryer as other products.

Burger King has joined dozens of restaurants, cafes and fast-food chains who have launched new products for Veganaury this year.

As many as 125,000 people taking part in the challenge are based in the UK, this year, with a record 500,000 ditching meat and dairy globally.  

Subway has unveiled the new additions to its plant-based menu for 2021 – the vegan T.L.C. (Tastes Like Chicken) Sub and Vegan Double Choc Cookie.

Meanwhile, Domino’s has launched a vegan chick’n pizza and nuggets, while  KFC are bringing back their bespoke Quorn™ fillet coated in the Colonel’s Original Recipe herbs and spices, topped with fresh iceberg lettuce, creamy vegan mayo and housed in a soft glazed bun.    

Deliveroo has yet again seen a huge increase in demand for vegan food in the last twelve months, with orders of plant-based dishes up 163 per cent on the previous year. 

According to the food-delivery giant, this first week of January 2021 has already seen a 153 per cent rise in searches for ‘vegan’ food in the app compared to the month before, as Brits across the country take on Veganuary.
