Rob Brydon dashes hopes that Gavin and Stacey will return for one final episode

He quickly became a beloved fan-favourite as the hilarious Bryn West on Gavin and Stacey.

But Rob Brydon has dashed fans’ hopes that the Welsh sitcom will return for a final episode amid mixed messages from the show’s creators James Corden and Ruth Jones.

The Welsh comedian, 55, revealed there is ‘nothing in the works’, despite reading that James, 42, said ‘they will do another special at some point’.

During a BBC Breakfast interview on Monday, he quipped that he ‘hasn’t heard’ of any upcoming special – ‘unless they are doing it’ without him.

Addressing the ongoing rumours, Rob explained:  ‘I read a thing that James had said yes they would do another special at some point.

‘But there is certainly nothing in the works – unless they are doing it without me, I certainly haven’t heard that.

‘But last year’s special, which did so well, is being repeated this year, I think on Christmas Eve.

‘It was so much fun to watch that last year, especially at the end with the proposal that took people by surprise. It was so lovely to be part of that as well.’

He went on to explain how Bryn’s Christmas would differ this year amid the strict Covid-19 safety regulations, saying he wouldn’t be able to ‘cook for over 12 people’.

The actor continued: ‘I was cooking Christmas dinner for, over – what was it – 12, I can’t remember now. What would he be doing now? I’m cooking Christmas dinner for myself!’

And Rob also quipped that there wasn’t ‘much acting needed’ when portraying Bryn’s questionable cooking technique, as he revealed he isn’t the chef of his house.

Gavin and Stacey was written by Ruth, 54, who played Nessa Jenkins, and James, the actor behind the beloved character, Neil ‘Smithy’ Smith.

The award-winning comedy first aired in 2017 and followed the stories of two families – Gavin’s relatives in Billericay, Essex, and Stacey’s clan in Barry, South Wales.

It ran for two seasons until 2008, before airing one-off specials in 2009, 2010 and last year.

Actor and writer James has since ventured stateside where he presents his own talk show, The Late Late Show with James Corden.

But earlier this month, the TV host suggested that Gavin and Stacey will return for one final episode.

He revealed the future instalment ‘will really be the last, final part’ of the programme, but admitted he doesn’t plan on producing the new series soon as ‘it’s too much pressure at the moment’.

The comedian told Metro: ‘I don’t know, is the answer. I honestly don’t. We’re all on a WhatsApp text group.

‘All of us and Matt [Horne] and Jo [Page] did a special radio show for BBC Wales the other day that will go out on Christmas.

‘And we all contributed to that somewhat. And we’re always talking, all of us, and Ruth [Jones] and I talk all the time. I hope so much we do it. The next one will really be the last, final part.

‘And that is a little too much pressure for my chest to take at the moment, if I’m honest, in amongst the anxiety of 2020.

‘If I had any notion of trying to make another Christmas special I don’t think I’d be able to breathe.’

However, fellow show-creator Ruth recently dashed hopes of a comeback as she admitted the show ‘may never return to Barry’.

The Welsh writer said on This Morning last month: ‘There aren’t any plans to write anything. Obviously James is in America and I’m in Wales.

‘The joy of our last special is that if we never go back to Barry, we’ll always wonder what happened next.

‘I quite like leaving it hanging. I’m sorry I don’t have any better news.’

It came in contrast to BBC bosses confirming that the much-loved show will be revived again in the future.

While outlining the upcoming Christmas television schedule, the channel’s Chief Content Officer, Charlotte Moore, discussed the future of the BBC1 sitcom.

She explained: ‘That wasn’t something that was going to happen this year,’ and followed that up with: ‘One day.’

The thespians who played Gavin and Stacey, Joanna Page, 43, and Mathew Horne, 42, are also set to team up for a festive show on BBC Radio Wales this year.

The pair will work together on the one-off programme which will feature a number of Gavin and Stacey guests, but it is unclear if they will shed any light on Nessa and Smith’s proposal in the last TV episode.
