IT’S NO TIME FOR GREY

My usual advice in this column encourages the use of understated, versatile pieces that you can wear for years to come, in navy/black/grey. These colours are smart, forgiving and never fall out of fashion. But extreme times call for an extreme palette — and what could be better than neon? That’s right.

Today is the day for Day-Glo. Hear me out. We’re all looking for ways to cheer ourselves up, and bright, eye-catching colours are a great way to lift your mood and everyone else’s. So for once I’m advising trend-led fashion.

HIGHLIGHTER ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK

You may be worrying that you’ll look like an extra from an 1980s workout video (Scottish designer Christopher Kane told Vogue: ‘I love neon — it’s so manmade and loud and obnoxious’ — but it can be elegant too.

Take a look at Valentino’s SS20 collection with its array of floorsweeping gowns in highlighter colours. Prada championed orange outerwear. Neon done well — punchy pink, zingy yellow, glowing green — synthetic flavouring for the eyes.

OPT FOR A BELT OR A KNIT

Ease yourself in with an accessory. A bright belt will add interest to an otherwise dull dress. There are also some exciting knits which will look brilliant on Zoom and go well with jeans. Or, if you want to avoid denim, dress your neon piece up with a sophisticated pair of wide-leg black trousers.

GO ON, BE DARING

Why not try an acid-yellow dress? Now is the time to wear something you would normally be too afraid to try: after all, only a handful of people will see you anyway.
