Mother slammed by parents for using kebab sticks to jazz up four-year-old’s sandwiches

Mother who sends her son, 4, to school with his packed lunch on KEBAB sticks claims it’s solved his fussy eating – but critics warn they could cause injury or be used for ‘stabbing’ classmates

  • Australian mother proudly showed off her ‘sandwich kebabs’ on Facebook
  • She had made them as it encouraged her four-year-old to eat all his lunch
  • But other parents said the sharps stick were an accident waiting to happen

A mother told how she sent her four-year-old son to school with his packed lunch on kebab sticks, claiming it solved his fussy eating.

The unnamed Australian mother kicked off a discussion when she shared a photo of her son’s lunch box to Facebook group Lunchbox Mums, showing strawberries, wraps and veggies all presented on individual kebab sticks.

Other parents responded with their own pictures, including one mother who revealed she sent her child off to school with skewered sandwiches.

However they came under fire from other parents who questioned whether the kebab sticks were safe, saying they could be used to ‘stab’ other children.

Explaining her reasoning, the first mother wrote: ‘Lunch hack – all foods suddenly become 400 per cent better tasting on a stick. [My son’s] four, lunch is supervised at tables and he’s had skewers multiple times, never even thought to poke anyone with them.

‘Obviously don’t do this for your children if you know they won’t manage. I know accidents happen but as with anything it’s risk assessment and management.’

Other parents were quick to praise the idea and some even shared pictures of their ‘kebabs’, which they used to make lunch more enticing for their youngsters.

But some claimed the method was too dangerous, with one mother claiming her four-year-old daughter was hospitalised after an accident involving a skewer at lunchtime.

She said: ‘My child (four) unfortunately got one of these skewers in her foot and had to get it surgically removed and be in hospital for a few day as a child left one of these sticks laying around after lunch (not my child someone else’s).

‘They pierce the skin very easily and get badly infected. Please think twice before sending these to school with any child no matter what age.

‘No matter how fun these are think of the consequences of doing this.’

Another mother wrote: ‘I would be so nervous sending mine with skewers lol knowing my luck they’d stab someone with them haha love the idea tho!’

A third added: ‘Looks delicious but depending the age I’d be concerned about safety, even sitting they can still hurt other kids with that. Maybe trying find some flexible cute skewers I’d say, not judging you.’
