Brit Awards 2020: Stormzy, Lewis Capaldi and Dave lead male-dominated nominations

The nominations for the 2020 Brit Awards have been announced, with rapper Dave and singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi leading with four nominations each.

Grime star Stormzy and singer Mabel have three nods apiece, including for Best Male and Best Female Solo Artist, respectively. Stormzy is also up for the Mastercard Album of the Year for Heavy in the Head. He previously won the prize in 2018 for his debut album Gang Signs & Prayer.

Harry Styles received his first solo nomination for Mastercard Album of the Year, for his second record Fine Line, while Michael Kiwanuka, who released his critically acclaimed third album in 2019, was nominated in the same category.

Among the musicians nominated for International Male Solo Art is Bruce Springsteen, who has previously been up in the same category seven times. Also nominated are Burna Boy, Dermot Kennedy, Post Malone and Tyler, the Creator.

This year’s awards are noticeably male-dominated, with no female nominees in either the Best Group or Best Album categories. Mabel is the only woman in the Best New Artist category and the only solo artist up for Song of the Year, which is voted for by the Academy. Normani is featured “Dancing with a Stranger” with Sam Smith, while Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson are nominated for their collaboration “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart”.
