Band to play Primavera Sound festival shows in 2020

Pavement, the acclaimed US indie-rock band, will reunite for two festival shows in Spain and Portugal next year, it has been announced.

The California-based group will play at Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona and Porto, with the performances billed by organisers as their “only two worldwide shows in 2020”.

Pavement disbanded in 1999 after the release of their fifth and final album, Terror Twilight, but reunited for a comeback tour in 2010.

Next year’s shows will mark the band’s 30th anniversary.

Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus teased the possibility of a reunion during an interview earlier this month. He told Rolling Stone magazine’s Music Now podcast: “[It’s] realistic. Anything’s possible.

“If there’s interest, then that’s always a factor. If people are really psyched about it, I’d be psyched about it too. So we’ll see.”

The band’s initial split in 1999 was mired in acrimony. During their final concert, at London’s Brixton Academy, Malkmus attached a pair of handcuffs to his microphone stand and told the audience: “These symbolise what it’s like being in a band all these years.”
