Brit Awards 2020: Billie Eilish says she has felt ‘very hated recently’ as she fights back tears accepting award

Billie Eilish said she has been feeling “very hated recently” when she took the stage to accept her Brit award on Tuesday night (18 February).

The singer fought back tears as she accepted the prize for International Female Solo Artist, following her performance of the new James Bond theme song “No Time to Die”.

“I have felt very hated recently,” she told the audience. “When I was on the stage and saw you guys smiling at me, it genuinely made me want to cry. I want to cry right now.”

Eilish also paid tribute to her fellow nominees Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Lana Del Rey and Lizzo, saying: “You’re the only reason I exist. You deserve this.”

The singer recently revealed she has stopped reading Instagram comments because internet trolls were “ruining” her life.

Justin Bieber also vowed to help her navigate fame and cope with online hate.

The 2020 Brit Awards took place at London’s O2 Arena. This year’s ceremony, which celebrated the event’s 40th anniversary, was presented by Jack Whitehall.

One of the evening’s highlights included Dave adding lyrics to his song “Black”, which saw him call Boris Johnson a “real racist” and criticised the UK media’s treatment of Meghan Markle.

Stormzy won Male Solo Artist, while Mabel triumphed in the Female Solo Artist category. See the full list of winners here.
